When we moved into our house we had to buy ALL of our furniture. It was our first home and we didn’t even rent before that! So IKEA was our best friend. One of these IKEA pieces of furniture was our white coffee table.
Don’t get me wrong, I did actually like the table. But as time went on and our house became more and more furnished and I actually started decorating with my style, I wanted something new. But the cost of a table just wasn’t something I wanted to shell out when we had a perfectly good table already. Plus, I like to build things myself (I’ll have to show you guys my dining room table I made with my dad sometime soon!).
I decided to create a tabletop that just slips right on top of my existing coffee table. I started with 4 pieces of 1″x2″Â that were cut to fit right around the top of my table. When put together, the inside dimensions of the rectangle I put together measured the outside of the existing tabletop.
I then cut 5 pieces of 1″x6″ boards that would make the middle of the table top. I then framed the outside of those 5 pieces with 4 additional pieces of the 1″x6″ boards. I used wood glue to keep it together since the tabletop would be supporting it. I then glued and screwed in the wood box I created earlier to add stability and allow it to slip right onto the existing table.
I also stained the table top to match my dining table (which you can see a peek of in the background although my decor has completely changed already lol).
And VÓILA! A brand new table!
What kinds of DIY projects have you done in your home?
Wow you’re so crafty! The table came out so good and looks great with the rest of your place!
Wow that’s actually such a great DIY idea! I DIY’d my coffee table a bit too. I bought a white and glass one from IKEA and we ended up painting all the white parts gold. It looks much more expensive now!

Unfortunately, we’re not in a house just yet, so I haven’t had a chance to experiment much. Ever since I’ve moved, I’ve discovered how amazing IKEA is for home finds. I’m obsessed with that store haha. You did a great job staining that table too!
